I have always borrowed from a wide range of cultural sources in my work. Mixed media is my favorite technique because it allows me to incorporate found materials from several resources and reassemble them into something totally new yet still familiar. It’s a form of sampling that is used in other arts like the music industry. By juxtaposing Catholic holy cards from Italy with fortune cookie sayings from Chinese restaurants, I am gently suggesting a new spiritual iconography that is inclusive rather than intolerant. I’ve always thought that God has a sense of humor, and, I’ve tried to reflect that in my “Fortunate Saints Series”.
